The Connecting Women in Moreland project is facilitated by VICSEG New Futures and aims to foster gender equity and social cohesion for refugees, asylum seekers and migrant women in the City of Moreland.

“When I first came to Australia, I had no friends. After joining this group, I have many friends. I feel very confident and because of this community, I’m learning new things in Australia”

Sapna Rani, Women’s Group participant.

Sapna and her husband migrated from India as students. As the youngest and newest member of the Glenroy Women’s Group, Sapna has found her community and confidence with the support and encouragement of the other women in the group. Sapna is currently studying her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care with us at New Futures Training and is working towards becoming an educator.

The Women’s Group brings together women and female identifying people from all backgrounds, newly arrived as well as existing communities. The main aim of the group is to foster gender equity and social cohesion and also provide pathways to further training and employment.

Funded under Moreland City Council's Social Cohesion ProjectVICSEG has established four Women’s Groups across Moreland in –Glenroy, Coburg and Fawkner The groups are free and children are welcome.

The groups are facilitated by our bi-cultural workers from the local community and the women meet once every week for a couple of hours. The weekly sessions include discussions and information around a wide range of topics, such as Women’s health, Raising Bilingual children, Stress Management, Employment pathways and more. The groups also host specialist speakers from different service providers such as Victoria Police, drummond street services, Moreland Council and more.

...As immigrants we really want introductions to these topics because we don’t know moving from one country to another. It has been really helpful.”

Nayab Kalim, Women’s Group participant.
